Fylingdales is patrolled in vehicles by the Ministry of Defence Police (MDP). They make tours around the fence and the surrounding roads (e.g. the A619). This is done approximately every hour, on the hour. When patrolling the fence at night, they drive with their headlights on and you can see them coming.

There are also MDP dogs and handlers. They patrol the fence line and do not go on to the surrounding moor unless the dog has picked up a scent.

On any one shift there will be between 10 and 30 MDPs, but generally they don’t get out of their vehicles unless they have to.

You may find MDP officers sitting in vehicles in the following locations at night:

  • On the south side of the base, around the SATCOM compound, either inside the fence or just off the outside track. If they are parked inside the fence it is very hard for them to see what is going on outside the fence.
  • On the outside track, just north of the south east corner of the fence. This is normally where the dog handlers park up.

The MDP have powers of arrest both on and off the base.
